Last year, we had the privilege of working on a remarkable residential project—a complete backyard transformation designed to bring together relaxation, functionality, and charm in one cohesive outdoor space. When our clients came to us, they had a vision: taking a backyard that felt less like a series of small, disconnected spaces and making it a harmonious retreat they could enjoy every day.
The initial layout featured two patios that didn’t align with the family’s lifestyle and felt isolated from one another. The landscaping, while once lush, had become overgrown, creating a closed-off feeling and limiting the potential of this beautiful space. Additionally, two doors opened to the yard, but neither felt fully connected, making the space feel segmented rather than inviting.
Our team set out to reimagine this yard as an open, flowing retreat.
First, we expanded the patios, enhancing their size and versatility to provide dedicated areas for reading, relaxing, and hosting. A reading patio near the parlor door became a quiet nook, while a larger destination patio was designed to serve as the hub, anchored by a custom fire pit.
But the project didn’t stop with the patios.
We wanted the entire rear yard to feel unified, so we are creating a winding bluestone chip walkway. This pathway connects the patios and the two rear doors, to bring a sense of movement and cohesion around the entire yard and allowing the family to navigate the space with ease. The path also introduces an element of discovery, guiding visitors from one inviting area to the next.
The thermal bluestone patios bring a refined yet natural look, while stucco walls define the outdoor rooms, visually connecting them with the style of the home.
To add a whimsical, elegant touch, we are incorporating a fountain in the main patio area, which is sure to bring an ambiance of relaxation and sophistication. A fully functional BBQ center will add practicality and make the space ready for gatherings.
To complement the hardscapes, the landscaping will be carefully chosen and designed to fit the style of each area. Playful, natural plantings will line the walkways, creating a welcoming journey.
In contrast, the patios will be surrounded by more formal plantings that will lend structure and a polished look to these gathering spaces. The mindful plant selection and layout will give each area its own identity, enhancing both the functionality and beauty of the yard.
This project is getting ready to be enjoyed, and we can’t wait to see the family experience it in full. From thoughtful planning to carefully chosen materials, each step of this transformation is about crafting a space that harmonizes with the family’s lifestyle.
